My son has Autism.
We found out 6 years ago that my son had Autism. He was 6 at the time and in grade 1. He was acting differently in class, not working, not interacting with the kids, licking his hand etc. The school psychologist viewed him and pulled us in for a meeting. She said it may be Autism. We were devastated.
Prior to this we thought there was something wrong as he wasn't talking on time, but all his other milestones had been met. Walking at 10 months!! We took him to the doctor and nothing, he's fine, but maybe soemthing is wrong with his hearing. No the next doc said his hearing is fine. He does however line his toys up and have repetitious behaviour. Oh he's fine. He played along side other kids from the age of 2 - 4 and rode bikes etc. . He attended preschool and obsessed over one boy. The teachers didn't report anything wrong. Kindergarden the teacher was concerned he didn't play with the other kids.... grade 1.... may have Autism.
We take him to doctor and he is diagnosed with PDD-NOS. Take this to the school and they do nothing. NO help, no IEP, nothing. I read into it and research, and they won't help unless the child has an AUTISM diagnosis. ARGH! So to another 4 hr. appt. to finally have the right diagnosis. He is diagnosed with Autism and a language based learning disorder.
The next 2 years is a battle trying to get my son help in school. First I had to insure the stupid prinicpal would provide support and an IEP. So finally after 2 years he has almost full time support in class room as well as support on the playground.
The battle is on going. The first principal retired 1 yr. ago and she was of the thought that the kids with special needs should just be put somewhere and forgot about. Not sorry to see her go.
The new principal has been very helpful, but doesn't truly understand Autism. He wonders why my son says socially unacceptable things when he gets angry. It is his Autism. Maybe he does it for attention the principal says!!!?? That would be a no.
Anyhow, it is hard. We love our son to death and will support him anyway he needs to be so that he can have a good productive life. My issue is getting everyone else to understand Autism. It is very very very hard.
